Annual Research Symposium 2024: Driving Innovation for a Sustainable Future
The Faculty of Technology at the University of Colombo successfully hosted the Annual Research Symposium 2024 today, December 3rd, 2024. This year’s symposium, marking its 8th edition, was held under the theme “Research in Technology for a Sustainable Future,” underscoring the faculty’s commitment to fostering impactful innovation for a greener tomorrow.
The symposium gathered leading researchers, innovators, and industry experts, providing a platform for meaningful discussions and collaboration on how technology can contribute to sustainable solutions. In addition to the keynote sessions, a Research and Invention Showcase was held in parallel, where undergraduate students presented their cutting-edge research and innovative projects through posters and product demonstrations.
The event was graced by Senior Professor H.D. Karunaratne, Vice Chancellor of the University of Colombo, who served as the Chief Guest. His address highlighted the importance of research in driving societal progress and sustainability.
The symposium featured three distinguished keynote speakers:
- Prof. R.A.R.C. Gopura, Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies at the University of Moratuwa, spoke on “Bionics Limbs: Innovations and Challenges in Robotic Prosthetics.”
- Dr. Chaminda Ranasinghe, Founder and CEO of IDEAHUB (PVT) Ltd., delivered a keynote on “Technology for a Sustainable Future,” emphasizing how technology can be harnessed to address environmental challenges and drive positive change.
- Prof. George Ntalos, Head of the Department of Forestry, Wood Science, and Design at the University of Thessaly, Greece, presented on “Sustainable Forestry Bioeconomy through Higher Education in Greece,” sharing insights on integrating sustainability into higher education and the forestry sector.
