The University of Peradeniya has proudly secured the top position in Sri Lanka and ranks 10th in South Asia, 101st in Asia, and 192nd globally in the prestigious UI GreenMetric World University Ranking for 2024. With a remarkable score of 8,050 out of 10,000, the university is now part of the elite group of 309 Gold Cluster Universities. Notably, the University of Peradeniya has climbed 87 positions globally compared to the previous year, a testament to its steadfast commitment to sustainability and ongoing improvements.
The UI GreenMetric World University Ranking evaluates institutions based on six key criteria: Setting and Infrastructure (SI), Energy and Climate Change (EC), Waste (WS), Water (WR), Transport (TR), and Education (ED). The University of Peradeniya excelled in these areas, achieving scores of 1300 in SI, 1550 in EC, 1125 in WS, 750 in WR, 1600 in TR, and 1725 in ED.
A key factor behind this achievement is the Center for Environmental Sustainability (CES) at the university, which has been instrumental in implementing sustainability practices and policies across the campus. Over the past three years, CES has played a vital role in driving the university’s environmental initiatives, significantly contributing to this impressive ranking.
