The Sinhala and Tamil New Year is a treasured cultural tradition in Sri Lanka, passed down from our ancestors and celebrated for generations. As part of this tradition, the Rotaract Club of University of Ruhuna organized an annual New Year festival. The event took place on May 1, 2025, at the Wellamadama premises of the university, starting at 9 a.m. Around 30 Rotaractors participated making the occasion lively and vibrant.
Adding excitement ahead of the festival, the club hosted an online competition to select the Avurudu Kumariya and Kumara (New Year Prince and Princess). Many joined the online fun, and the winners were crowed at the event with special prizes. This year the prize distribution was proudly sponsored by “Forever Skin Natural’s“. Support from, “Fingara Club” and “Twinkle Touch” also played a key role in making the event a grand success.
The festival included several traditional New Year games, such as, Balancing a lime on a spoon, Musical hats, Balloon bursting, Yogurt-eating contests etc. These simple yet entertaining games brought out the competitive spirit in everyone, with winners walking away with exciting prizes. More importantly, the celebration created a warm space for teamwork, togetherness and friendship among the members.
Though the event lasted only a few hours, it left lasting memories. The cheerful atmosphere, smiling faces and shared laughter made “Ruhunata Avurudu ’25” a truly meaningful celebration of tradition, unity and joy.
Looking forward to keeping this wonderful tradition alive in the years to come!
