IEEE RAS of IIT Ignites National Robotics Talent with MicroMaze 2.0

IEEE RAS of IIT

Founded in 2023, the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society of IIT is a student-led initiative under IEEE that fosters technological curiosity and innovation in robotics and automation. The society is committed to empowering undergraduates through hands-on learning, technical mentorship, and collaborative problem-solving. Through events like MicroMaze, IEEE RAS of IIT fulfills its vision of encouraging and guiding tomorrow’s tech leaders.

Vision

MicroMaze 2.0 is not just a competition, it is a platform designed to cultivate real-world skills in robotics, automation, and analytical thinking among undergraduates. By encouraging innovation, teamwork, and hands-on problem-solving, the event bridges the gap between theoretical education and industry expectations. Participants are challenged to think critically, design strategically, and build with precision, preparing them for the fast-evolving demands of the tech industry.

MicroMaze – First Edition

Launched by the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS) of the Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT), the inaugural edition of MicroMaze set the foundation for what is now one of Sri Lanka’s most impactful inter-university robotics competitions.

The first MicroMaze challenged participants to design and build autonomous micro mouse robots capable of solving complex mazes within a limited time frame. The competition was a resounding success, drawing wide interest from universities across the island and leaving a strong impression on both participants and observers. The positive feedback and enthusiasm from students, sponsors, and universities alike encouraged IEEE RAS of IIT to continue and elevate the event further.

Overview of MicroMaze 2.0

Following the overwhelming response to the first edition, MicroMaze 2.0 returns in 2025 with a larger scale, upgraded challenges, and a more immersive experience. This second edition is set to make a greater impact through broader participation and enhanced structure.MicroMaze 2.0 has attracted the participation of over 150+ teams from more than 25+ universities across the country, making it a truly national-level event. With over 550 undergraduates taking part, the competition stands as a testament to the growing enthusiasm for robotics and automation among Sri Lanka’s youth. The event also features a fully revamped maze-solving arena designed to test precision, logic, and efficiency under pressure.

The Grand Finale – Royal MAS Arena

The final showdown of MicroMaze 2.0 will take place at the prestigious Royal MAS Arena on August 24, 2025. This venue will host the qualifier and final rounds on the same day, where the Top 10 teams will battle it out in a technically demanding final maze setup. The winners will be crowned based on the performance of their autonomous micro mouse robots.

With its dynamic format, extensive university participation, and robust technical engagement, MicroMaze 2.0 has established itself as a flagship event for robotics innovation in Sri Lanka’s academic sphere. IEEE RAS of IIT continues to inspire the next generation of technologists through initiatives like MicroMaze – where creativity meets engineering, and ambition transforms into achievement.
