Nursing Pledge Ceremony Marks Key Milestone for 2022/2023 Cohort at University of Peradeniya

The Department of Nursing of the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, University of Peradeniya, ceremonially conducted the Nursing Pledge Ceremony for the 2022/2023 undergraduate batch on 14th November 2025 at the Diamond Jubilee Hall. The ceremony marked a significant milestone for students who have completed their first academic year and are now preparing to enter advanced stages of nursing practice.

In honour of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, the Nightingale Lamp was lit and her statue ceremonially garlanded. As a symbol of professional progression, students received their nursing caps and three-wicked lamps, representing knowledge, skilled hands, and a compassionate heart. The students then collectively took the Nursing Pledge, reaffirming their commitment to the ethical and moral values of the profession.

The event welcomed a distinguished gathering of invitees and proud parents. Prof. M. D. Lamawansa, founder Head of the Department of Nursing and former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya, graced the occasion as Chief Guest, inspiring students through his reflections on leadership and professional growth.

Also in attendance were Prof. Terrance Madhujith, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya; Prof. M. D. M. L. D. K. Yatawara, Dean of the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences; deans of several faculties; directors of institutes; heads of departments; academic staff; and clinical training personnel, whose presence added to the significance of the occasion.

The Department of Nursing extends heartfelt appreciation to all academic and non-academic staff, clinical partners, students, and parents whose commitment contributed to the success of the ceremony. Warmest wishes are conveyed to the 2022/2023 batch as they continue their academic journey and professional development in the nursing field.
