University of Kelaniya Launches Sri Lanka’s First Large-Scale Wi-Fi 7 Network

The University of Kelaniya has made history by launching Sri Lanka’s first large-scale Wi-Fi 7 network, with over 225 access points deployed across its campus. This landmark achievement was officially announced at the Smart University Summit 2025, held at the Goldi Sands Hotel in Negombo. The state-of-the-art Wi-Fi 7 network delivers multi-gigabit internet speeds, ultra-low latency, and comprehensive campus-wide coverage—enabling cutting-edge capabilities such as immersive virtual learning environments, 8K video streaming, virtual laboratories, and the integration of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies.

The project was powered by Huawei Technologies Lanka Co., (Pvt) Ltd and implemented by N-able Private Limited. This next-generation infrastructure is designed to transform traditional educational settings into smart, efficient, and future-ready campuses.

The summit, hosted by Huawei and co-hosted by the Lanka Education and Research Network (LEARN), attracted a wide range of IT professionals, digital leaders, and higher education stakeholders from across Sri Lanka. Notable attendees included Allen Liu Shuofei, Vice President of Huawei South Asia; Prof. Ruwan Wikramarachchi, Director of the ICT Center at the University of Kelaniya; Prof. Roshan G. Ragel, CEO of LEARN; and Mr. Manfred Cai, Director of Huawei South Asia.

The launch of this Wi-Fi 7 network represents a major milestone in Sri Lanka’s digital education journey. It reflects a broader national commitment to developing technology-driven, knowledge-based universities that promote research, collaboration, and innovation. With support for emerging fields such as artificial intelligence (AI) and Industry 5.0, the University of Kelaniya’s advanced network sets a precedent for campuses across the country to evolve into fully connected hubs of digital transformation.
