The University of Colombo successfully hosted its Annual Career Fair 2024 last week, bringing together hundreds of students, faculty members, and top industry professionals from across Sri Lanka. The event, held at the university’s iconic main auditorium, was designed to provide students with invaluable opportunities to network with employers, explore career paths, and enhance their professional skills.
A Day of Opportunities and Connections
The Career Fair featured over 50 leading companies and organizations, including tech giants, multinational corporations, and non-profits. Companies like Dialog Axiata, MAS Holdings, and Unilever Sri Lanka were among the key participants, actively engaging with students through interactive sessions and recruitment drives.
“This event bridges the gap between academics and the professional world. It’s an incredible opportunity for students to understand industry expectations and showcase their potential,” said Dr. Lakshitha Perera, Dean of the Faculty of Management and Finance.
Workshops and Panel Discussions
The fair wasn’t just about networking—it was also a learning experience. A series of workshops and panel discussions were organized throughout the day, covering topics such as:
- Resume Building and Interview Tips
- Emerging Trends in the Job Market
- Personal Branding for Career Success
One of the standout sessions was a panel discussion titled “The Future of Work in a Digital Economy”, where industry leaders shared insights on how technology is reshaping the workplace.
Student Success Stories
For many students, the Career Fair proved to be a turning point. Anjali Wijesinghe, a final-year IT student, shared her experience:
“I’ve been dreaming of working for a tech company, and today I got shortlisted for an internship at Virtusa! The fair was incredibly well-organized, and I learned so much from the resume workshop.”
Recognition and Thanks
The event concluded with a vote of thanks from the organizing committee, acknowledging the efforts of faculty members, student volunteers, and participating companies. Special recognition was given to University Career Services, whose tireless efforts made the event a success.
Looking Ahead
The University of Colombo continues to prioritize student development by organizing events that connect academics with the professional world. With this year’s Career Fair setting a high standard, students and faculty alike are already looking forward to next year’s edition.
