Ven. Dr. Gallelle Sumanasiri Thera Resigns as Chancellor of Rajarata University Amid Controversy

Ven. Dr. Gallelle Sumanasiri Thera, who was appointed Chancellor of Rajarata University on February 10, 2025, has reportedly tendered his resignation. According to reports, the Thera submitted his resignation through a letter addressed to the President’s Secretary. In the letter, Ven. Sumanasiri Thera emphasized that he valued the preservation of harmony within the Sangha over the Chancellor position, suggesting that if his role led to division or discord, he would prioritize unity instead.

His resignation follows controversy surrounding his appointment, which occurred after the removal of the Chief Incumbent of Ruwanweli Maha Seya Viharaya, Sastrapathi Pandita Ethalewatunu Wewe Gnanathilaka Thero, from his position. Gnanathilaka Thero had held the Chancellor post since 2020 and was the first monk to serve in the role at Rajarata University. His term was set to end this month, but the government did not extend it, instead appointing Ven. Sumanasiri Thera before the conclusion of Gnanathilaka Thero’s tenure. Concerns surrounding this new appointment may have influenced Ven. Sumanasiri Thera’s decision to step down.
